Southbank Centre passionately believes the arts have the power to transform lives. We also believe that the arts must be available to all of us – and this lies at the heart of all we do.
Southbank Centre is a world-famous arts centre on the South Bank of the Thames. Created in 1951 for the Festival of Britain, Southbank Centre draws on its heritage as a festival site, with art and activities inside and outside. We encourage everyone to become involved in the arts in new and creative ways.
We offer a wide range of cultural events. See music, dance, art, performance and spoken word events throughout the year. Take part in free activities and events and enjoy a wide range of restaurants, cafes and shops.
Every year, thousands of musicians and artists perform to millions of visitors, making this one of the most popular cultural destinations in the country. We hold different festivals throughout the year.
We are committed to working with young, emerging and established talent across the artistic community. We currently support four Resident Orchestras, 14 Artists in Residence and over 100 other artistic organisations. We manage the Arts Council Collection on behalf of Arts Council England and curate the Hayward Touring Exhibition programme in venues throughout the UK.
Southbank Centre occupies a 21-acre site in the midst of London’s vibrant cultural quarter on the South Bank of the Thames. Southbank Centre includes Royal Festival Hall,Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, the Hayward Gallery, and The Poetry Library. As well as these venues, there are restaurants, cafes, bars and shops to enjoy.
‘Southbank Centre's wide-ranging programme – classical, world music, rock, pop, jazz, dance, literature and the visual arts – attracts the most diverse audience of any UK venue.’

Tango Garden has TWO rooms. So whether you like to socialise, just enjoy some nice dances, practice and investigate or a bit of everything, Tango Garden is the place to be on a Saturday Afternoon. You can quite literally have your cake and eat it !!
'The Practica' 4-7pm - in the Band Room is an Argentine style 'Practica social' a relaxed atmosphere informal milonga-like dance. A very social space where the line of dance and circulation rules are respected for the enjoyment of all, but without the strict rules associated with ultra-traditional milongas (see FAQs for more).
The Pure Practice Room 5pm - in the Guide Hall is a pure practice space with background music without cortinas. People are free to stop and discuss and work on anything they like.
Great tango music in tandas with cortinas by our resident DJ Mariano*
We usually have at least 3 home-made cakes (made from scratch by Mariano and Maral) plus tea/coffee, biscuits, sangria and other refreshments. We happily put the time and effort in for the baking as a gesture of love and appreciation for all who attend Tango Garden.
We appreciate donations to cover the cost of all the ingredients.
So we look forward to having you join us for some fantastic afternoons of tango dancing!
*OUR DJ MARIANO LAPLUME
besides being an experienced Tango dancer and teacher Mariano has a long history as a professional musician playing tango in more than 40 milongas in Buenos Aires and more than 80 cities around the world for almost 9 years. We're lucky to have him!
